Hi, I've been coming to the Canaries (and Fuerteventua especially) for several years and this is about my 7th or 8th trip here (Morro Jable). In 2018 and earlier I drove up the dirt road to the Mirador do los Canarios (near Morro Jable, specifically the road behind the petrol station at Barranco de Esquinazo). The road was open then but I think in 2019 a barrier was placed across the road and now (Jan 2022, my first trip since then) there are rocks blocking the track. I have read a few posts which say turn right through the 'private area' but I am reluctant to do that without doing a bit more investigation...

Can someone answer these questions please?

a) Is access permitted and has the road just been blocked 'unofficially'?

b) I've read there is a project to build a visitor centre - what is the status of this please?

It's a great pity if this viewpoint is no longer accessible as the view down to Cofete is stunning!

Thanks...

a) No, Sadly the area is blocked off and access is not permitted.  A couple of years ago we tried to get round but couldn't find the way through.

b) I too heard that and suspect it is true, but it could be years before they even start.  They can't even keep the Mirador Velosa open, and that must have been a money maker for them!

I agree, wonderful place.

Ok thanks. Am I correct in thinking the 'authorities' have blocked the road, or had it been done by locals? If the authorities have done it one might assume that the road is no longer maintained and could be even rougher than a normal dirt road? And hence it's not a good idea to try and drive on it ...

Yes, it was the authorities.

I would guess that it's still not too bad, but of course depends on what sort of car you have.  If a hired car you would not be insured to drive on it anyway, as their insurance only covers tarmac roads

Hi.  This raises a question that I have often wondered about when hiring a car here. There a quote a few unmettled (sp) roads here, in including that down to the lighthouse at the bottom of the island, and also to cofete. I would argue that traveling on these roads is *not* offroading as you are driving on a recognised route, that is also maintained. What do you think? (I know this is OT but it's my topic so I can go off it! ) ...

There are a great many roads and tracks on the island that are 'official' roads and certainly not 'off-roading', but they are not tarmac. However, as I understand it, car hire insurances specifically state they only cover tarmac roads.

Perhaps you should clarify this and read the terms and conditions of your insurance, or indeed ask your hire company.  I heard a few years ago that some companies will insure you for non-tarmac roads for a small extra cost.  Have to admit that the last time we hired a car was 5 years ago.
