I would like a bit of advice about what plants to grow as I’m new to gardening in this climate

I'm not much of a gardener but of course cacti and other succulents do well. Many cacti have really beautiful flowers.

You can grow almost any plant that loves sunshine and a sandy soil, just provide a good irrigation system.

I have a few fruits and herbs. Passion fruit has gone mad!  Strawberries are also doing surprisingly well.  Also fig trees, rosemary, chives, basil.  I'm moving home soon but when we are settled in our new home I will be planting a number of different fruit trees, including lemon, mango, apple.  Somebody also gave me some fruit of their Niss Perro (loquat) tree, I planted the stones in pots and I have 3 coming up :)

Just be careful of the wind and the sun and have a good irrigation system.  An experienced gardener of this area advised me to water the plants in the morning, not the evening.  This is because plants sleep so would not benefit as much from watering in the evening.
