It's 6 months a year. If you come in January you can only get 6 months but if you come in july you can get a year as it will be 6 months of year 1 and 6 months of year 2. Then the car has to be registered on The island which is very expensive and timely or you have to take it home or scrap it. We have researched it as we are currently on our way with our car now. we will be ok till june.

I believe it is a lot easier but it's still a process to register it on the island and pay the tax on it. Best if u get a receipt for much less that the value u pay for the car as the tax is a percentage of the value of the car.

you can have a vehicle here for 1 month before starting the importation process.if you don´t import it then you can have it here for max. 180days and then it cannot return for 180days.

if you buy  car on mainland you must still re- register the vehicle as being imported into the canaries.

If you haven't already left the UK it might be worth getting a few things before you do - you will have to change your headlights to European ones in order to pass the MOT and also break lights and reverse lights are the other way round here - although the MOT office let us off for that - but say we will have to have it done by the next MOT in 2 years time.

You might be able to get that kind of stuff 2nd hand on ebay maybe  - it was pretty costly to buy it out here from a local Suzuki dealer - around €500.
