Hi All, we are coming out to Caleta de Fuste in the middle of March for 3 weeks, with a view to possibly moving permanently. We are wondering what the ex-pat community is like and how easy it is to relocate. Any information would be great,

Regards

Bob

Hi, the ex-pat community is very big and mostly friendly, there’s all sorts of ways to make friends with the usual bingo and language lessons etc. relocating however is not so easy these days and usual requires some expert help and will definitely depend on your circumstances, however I would recommend it. Good luck.

Since Brexit it has become expensive to move overseas.

If you intend to retire and not work then it's just a matter of finance and health and you apply for the non-lucrative visa.

If you hope to work, unless you are a specialist in a highly skilled position you can more or less forget it.

This article gives the steps you need to take (all information is collated from the Spanish Government) https://fuerteventuranow.com/moving-to-fuerteventura-2/

Good luck with your plans, we are hoping to do the same next year but are unsure on where to go, Corralejo or Caleta. Luckily my partner  is Irish so I can 'piggy-back on to this!

There is a Bridge club and also Whist, in Caleta, unsure when they meet

W moved here last year after Brexit. It wasn’t easy at the time but have recently helped our daughter to move out and we found the process easier to understand. If you make the move we are available to help where we can

Does look a bit daunting, my main concern is how to transport our two cats!

Don't worry about Pet transport. We moved over here with our 2 dogs over 3 years ago and all went really well. As Grahamwhu wrote, you can talk to Woodside or any Pet Cargo handler. We used https://www.aiapets.com/  in the UK who sorted everything for us.

It depends on what Airport and which carrier you are using as not all carriers transport pets from the UK these days.  We flew from Birmingham with TUI, and had our dogs travel in the hold on the same flight as we did, when we arrived we met them at the Cargo depot at the airport after we cleared customs and they were both fine.

As for the ex-pat community, as with all communities, there are a large number of great friendly ex-pats ready to help, as well as unfortunately some time-wasters (especially alcoholics and other addicts eager to get something for free), This is the same wherever you go but luckily you soon get warned by the community who to avoid.

There are many ex-pats who want a little quieter life and as such do not live in the main reports of Caleta or Corralejo, but mix a little more with the locals in Antigua, La Oliva, Caldereta, El Cotillo, La Lares and many other villages/towns.

Relocating here was the best thing we ever did, the pace of life is slower than in the UK, we find the cost of living cheaper, the locals are very friendly as are the ex-pats, and of course the weather.

We moved our dog by road and ferry. Wasn’t cheap but he is part of family
