We'd like to visit the above sights but found out that the bus ride is a bit of an adventure.
Also, cab is too expensive and based on the topology, a bike ride is out of the question.
Does anyone have any experience on how to get there reliably?
Can you share your experience with us?

There are safari tours that go to Cofete and I believe also La Punta. I'm afraid I don't have contact details but perhaps you could go to a tourist office.
The disadvantage of a tour is that you are regulated with how much time you can spend at each destination.
Many people risk taking their hire car, but of course as soon as you leave the tarmac road you will not be insured. I have heard that one (or more) companies will cover you for an extra cost, but I do not know who or if they still do that. You could try asking your hire company.
