Hi, I am looking for a used car to buy in Fuertaventura. I am going to come there regularly for holidays, can you please recommend/ For what I see now, there are not many car dealers there so the prices are quite high, as there is no competition between them. Cars are more expensive than they are in UK. I will appreciate any advice, thanks

Yes, cars are a lot more expensive here than the UK, but on the other hand they hold their value much better if you come to sell your car.

Although I am out of touch with UK costs, car insurance may be a bit higher here too, although tax is lower, as is ITV (MOT).

It is important that you make sure there are no outstanding debts on the car.  Debts are on the car, not the person, so if there is a debt then you will become liable for it.

When buying through a business they will do all the paperwork, including transfer, for you, so much easier than buying privately.

If you do not already have an NIE, you will need to get one before you can purchase a car.  NIE is basically your tax number.

Do you have somewhere you can park and leave your car safely for the times you are not here?

There are a few places selling second hand cars.  About Cars in Corralejo, although probably a bit more expensive the owner, Wiebren, is very good.  There are several places in Puerto del Rosario.  There is Miguel in Antigua whose cars tend to be on the cheaper side.

But all in all you should work out the cost of owning a car here when only using it for up to 6 months a year, against the cost of just hiring a car at the airport.  Don't forget taxi costs to get to your car when you arrive and then again to the airport when departing.

While you could get lucky and find a very reliable car, you should also be prepared for the costs if it goes wrong.

You may well find it is just not worth the hassle and expense of buying a car.

hi, thank you so much for the info. As for parking, yes, i have a parking space, I am in process of buying a holiday home which includes a parking space there. And also it will not be just holiday place, I am thinking to retire there eventually, so the car will be needed. Plus I have a handicapped son, who loves travelling, that`s why I am going to buy a car and in search of not very expensive one:) if you know anyone who is selling please give my contact. Thanks

aah, unfortunately, it is very difficult to find a reliable one that is "not very expensive", and of course they tend to be snapped up very quickly.

As I say, I do recommend you buy through a car sales business, of course they're more expensive but do include the transfer costs (or should do!).  Do take a visit to Miguel in Antigua, although he is not always open but his phone number is on his building and if rung he'll be with you asap.

My husband is always looking on cars on Facebook's MarketPlace section.

However, if you do go to purchase privately, I strongly advise you have a gestoria to check the car's history and finance and also deal with the transfer.  Also make sure you check the log book for any anomalies. We looked at one car and when checking the log book realised it had been clocked.
