I live in Ireland but have a British passport. Do I need private health insurance to obtain a visa. If so any recommendations please

Yes, full health insurance is just one of the requirements.  It must be provided by a company that is approved by Spanish Government and be equivalent to the 'national' health service here, ie no exclusions and no excess.  Sorry, but I am unable to recommend

I joined the Spanish government one €60 a month I can recommend Yolanda from Liberty insurance. She  it out.

I presume you are talking about Convenio Especial, but to qualify for this you must have been a resident for at least a year.  For a visa you must have full health insurance or, if you are of retirement age, an S1.
