We have a property on the west coast of Fuerteventura. We already have a pool but it is in need of refurbishment, including relining, service/overhaul of the pump system, a new pool cover and paving around the pool. I'm looking for a recommendation of a quality and reliable contractor for this work.

Advice. Whoever you go with make sure:

1. They are fully registered as self-employed or as a company. There are many people who say they are but have no real experience of pools. It is very special and can be VERY costly. Some will suggest lining and some fibreglass. I chose Fiberglass as it lasts a lot longer and is easier to keep clean.

2. Get references and follow them up.

3. Make sure they have some form of indemnity insurance so that if things go wrong and they damage your property (or someone else's) they are covered.

4. make sure they tell you exactly what they are going to do with a quote on labour and parts. If they add things to your quote ask why.

5. Always get at least 2 quotations. The cheapest is not always the best but it means you can query both parties as to the price of parts..

I am speaking from the experience of friends of mine who went with someone and it was a nightmare. Not only did they do a terrible job, but also made it worse. With no insurance or even working legally, my friends had no way of getting compensation or money back.

Good luck.

Good advice above from Cyberion,

I too can thoroughly recommend Poolmark for quality and reliability.  We first used them about 4 years ago.  Then when we moved home to a property with no pool we had them to build one for us.  Also know others who have used them.

PoolMark are really good. I had a terrible brown stain on the fiberglass across my pool. I tried solutions suggsted by others but nothing worked. I went to Poolmark and they certainly know their stuff as they recommended something which got rid of it in 1 day.

Following with interest as we have just moved to the Island. We have a really nice pool but are struggling with its operation! We are looking for someone to show us how it all works. Looks like Poolmark may be able to help us? Very good advice about getting a registered company.

Not really as Poolmark are about refurbishing and installation rather than maintaining.  Your best bet would be to contact a chap called Jeff of The Pool Guy.  He maintains pools and would be able to help you.  I haven't used him but know that Poolmark recommend him
